A pristine jewel hidden in the vast jungles and foliage of South India is the state of Kerala. Popularly known as God’s own country due to the breath-taking sights it beholds, Kerala is truly one of its kinds and should be in everyone’s travel list. Some say that it is in Kerala where the ever working population of India slows down and bask in the peaceful glow of nature. Though Kerala deserves a long vacation but in the midst of the humdrum of our lives we often find it difficult to find that much time. Hence, we decided to plan a weekend gateway to Kerala, to help you all get some peace of mind.
Itinerary from Delhi to Kerala
Considering almost all of us don’t have much time, the best possible way for anyone to travel to Kerala from (let’s say) Delhi is undoubtedly by taking a flight.
We recommend you take a Friday night flight from Delhi to Kerala. It takes approximately 3hrs from Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram. Thiruvananthapuram being the nearest airport to Kollam we recommend it as the choice of airport.
From Thiruvananthapuram take a bus to Kollam district of Kerala. You can use Ticket Goose for booking bus tickets to Kollam. They have a great user-friendly interface and can get you some really economical deals. A bus will take approximately 2hrs and is thus the best option.
Hotels and Restaurants in Kerala
Kollam is a great city known for its natural beauty. It also has a myriad of hotels and resorts. We recommend Aadithyaa Resorts Lakeside, Cambay Palm Lagoon Hotel, The Raviz Kollam Resort, and The Quilon Beach- Kollam. These are all luxury hotels which can provide you with the best of facilities and fill your stay with tranquillity.
Attractions in Kerala
Coming over to the attractions in Kollam, well there are tons of them, but Self Drive Trips present you the best ones you can cover in a short trip.
Jatayu Nature Park
The Jatayu Nature Park is still under construction at Chadayamangalam (Jatayumangalam) town. Jatayu is a well-known demi-god of Hindu mythology who died saving Goddess Sita from Ravana. It is said that the giant sculpture of Jatayu which has been created in the park has been created on the same spot where Jatayu fell all those time back. Though initially in the developing stage the bird sculpture will have a 6D theater, an audio-visual based digital museum inside it and an adventure zone. There are also plans of a cable car for offering a bird’s eye view of the entire place.
Palaruvi Waterfalls
Palaruvi Waterfalls are a major tourist attraction in Kollam. Palaruvi literally means a stream of milk and is one of the most striking places to visit in Kerala.
Munroe Island
Named after Colonel John Munroe from the British Colonial Period, Munroe Island is a famous tourist destination which has a lot of Watersports as well as activities like fishing, boat racing and bird-watching etc.
Famous Cuisines of Kerala
Aside from the sightseeing, Kerala is famous for its many delicacies. Kerala is popular for its spice trade and is known as the Land of Spices. While you are there do try out these amazing dishes.
Puttu and Kadala Curry
A steamed rice cake cooked with coconut shavings, Puttu are the most popular breakfast dish of Kerala. Served with Kadala Curry (black chickpeas) this is one of the most delicious dishes you will come across in Kerala.
Dosa with Kerala Style Sambar
Made from fermented rice, the ghee roast dosa of Kerala is a must try.
For the love of Non-Veg do not, and I mean it, do not miss the Nadan Kozhi Varuthathu aka Spicy Chicken Fry and the Kerala Prawn Curry.
