People perform ‘rudrabhishek’ that is worship of Lord Shiva in their homes and lord shiva temples are beautifully decorated and illuminated. People also practice donations on this day especially donating lamps is considered important.

The 720 wicks have a significance which symbolizes the 360 days and nights of the Hindu calendar. People donate lamps to priests of the temples. The lamps are lit for the whole night in houses and temples. Lights are also floated in miniature boats in rivers. Lights are also kept under Tulsi, Amla, Peepal and Sacred Fig trees. People believe that the lights placed under trees and in water will help birds, insects and fishes who saw the light attain salvation.
