Kartika Purnima Festival in Tamil Nadu

Kartika Purnima also known as Tripuri Purnima and Tripurari Purnima is a holy festival celebrated on the Purnima day or the fifteenth lunar day of Kartika by Oriya community in Tamil Nadu. On the day of Kartik Purnima, people worship the river Ganges. Women wearing saree carry earthen lamps on the banks of the river. People take a ritual bath in river Ganga as a sign of worship at the time of sunrise or the moonrise in the evening. People gather here annually for worship and prayers.

Devotees gather to take holy bath in the river Ganga. People believe that Gods descended on Earth in sacred rivers so by taking a holy dip in the river they receive the blessings of God. This holy bath is called as Kartik snan.

Women play a very important role in this festival. They draw beautiful rangolis with flowers and colors in front of their houses. Many people practice fasting during the last five days of the month whereas some people fast for the entire month. People are involved in music, dance and bhajan singing is very common these days.

Devotees also make paper boats and sell as a part of the festival.

Anakuta is performed in temples that is offering food to the deities, feeding of Brahmins and any kind of donation especially donating cows is considered very religious. Any kind of violence is prohibited on this auspicious day including cutting of trees, cutting of crops, plucking of fruits and flowers, hair-cutting and shaving.

People perform ‘rudrabhishek’ that is worship of Lord Shiva in their homes and lord shiva temples are beautifully decorated and illuminated. People also practice donations on this day especially donating lamps is considered important.

On this day people during worship place 360 or 720 wicks in temples to reach heaven and escape hell after death. The 720 wicks have a significance which symbolizes the 360 days and nights of the Hindu calendar. People donate lamps to priests of the temples. The lamps are lit for the whole night in houses and temples. Lights are also floated in miniature boats in rivers. Lights are also kept under Tulsi, Amla, Peepal and Sacred Fig trees. People believe that the lights placed under trees and in water will help birds, insects and fishes who saw the light attain salvation.
